How did I get into Woodturning?
Following 29 years in the Royal Air Force as an Avionics Technician, I am now working for BAE Systems at RAF Coningsby working on Typhoon as a Weapons Systems Engineer. Away from the busy day job, I enjoy spending many hours in my workshop creating handmade wooden products. To be able to stand back and say ‘yes, I have made that’ brings me a sense of achievement and great satisfaction. My Dad, Michael Pigott was a keen woodturner and on occasion, I had a go under his watchful eye. Following his passing away, I inherited his tools in March 2008 and I owed it to him to continue his craft and continue to use his beloved Record Power lathe. I wish he could see me today and how I have improved from that first nervous attempt to make something by myself to what I am making today.
As a complete beginner and self taught, I joined two local clubs, the Lincolnshire Wolds Woodturning Association and the Lincolnshire Association of Woodturners. The Demonstrators have been an inspiration and the members are a valuable source of good advice to any beginner. I joined the Committee of the Lincolnshire Wolds Woodturners Association and produced the Club a website to promote woodturning locally and provide its members useful information. I would encourage everyone to join a local woodturning club and get involved with the running of the club, no matter how small a part you play. It is very easy just to sit back and watch, but without those who organise and run the clubs, they simply would not be able to exist.
I have made several pieces since 2008 of which some of my best can be seen in my Portfolio. Some have been commissions for friends, work colleagues and presents for the family. Having received lots of nice comments on my work and featured a couple of times in Woodturning magazine, I thought it was about time I had somewhere to show my work and if possible, sell some to a wider audience. The majority of my work are ‘one off’s’, however please feel free to have a look in my Shop and my Portfolio and if there is something you would like, but is not currently for sale, contact me.
Ordered Monday. Arrived Wednesday. High quality product beautifully made and writes wonderfully. This is my second bullet Pen. Had the twist version, loved it so much I got the bolt action too. Both are superb and a talking point when I use them at work. Can't recommend strongly enough R Gibson
